Welcome to Romani Farms: 700ha of breeding and finishing country near Taumarunui, home to two proven, low-input breeds, our long-established Coopworth stud and our newer RICHWILT flock.

We're focused on physically robust, disease-tolerant sheep that are fit for our environment, requiring minimal input and handling. That means no drench to adults, and minimal to lambs, no dipping for flystrike or lice. Running the studs with the commercials in bigger mobs, at high stocking rates, helps keep the pressure on. Both flocks are run together all year except at tupping.

The local environmental conditions don't let weak genetics hide: cool winters, hot, humid summers and autumns, and real pressure from facial eczema, internal parasites and flystrike. Performance at Romani is bred in, not fed in.

Every animal gets a thorough close physical examination annually, with teeth, feet and legs all scored on multiple aspects. These scores feed into breeding values for structural soundness, meaning we are able to cull animals based on the likelihood of a fault in the whole family, not just the individual.

Rams from both flocks are sold through private paddock sales rather than public auction. See our Ram Sales page for current availability, or get in touch to arrange a time to view.

“We are focusing on stud rams that have greater physical robustness, and ability to perform regardless of the worm challenge they face, and our drenching programme helps sort out those that are most worm tolerant.”
